"At the heart of this movement were three pivotal figures. Among them were Aime Cesaire, a poet and intellectual born and raised in the French colony of Martinique, Léopold Sédar Senghor, a philosopher, poet, and Senegal's future president, and Léon Damas, a poet of Guyanese origin known for his fierce critique of assimilation and cultural loss. Together, these three used the French language to assert their cultural identity.
